Doomsday theorists may be putting together survival kits all over the world but the heart of the Mayan kingdom in Mexico is preparing for the year all celebration. Tourism has been predicted to reach a staggering 52 million from just a little below 22 million per year. So, it has been turned into as much a fun filled event as a cataclysmic event date. Actually according to the Mayan calendar or the Mesoamerican long count calendar December 21, 2012 is regarded as the day when 5,125 year old calendar cycle ends. This has given rise to all sorts of doomsday predictions like the Mayan apocalypse.
In fact such is the impact that various Mayan Apocalypse doomsday theories have been calculated and speculated. They include from things like the next solar maximum, or the collision of the earth with an asteroid, or with a black hole or even another planet by the name of Nibiru. Other new age theorists suggest that earth may go through a spiritual transformation or mark the start of a new era in the history of humanity. However this idea of a Mayan apocalypse has been completely rejected by scholars from various disciplines. Mayan Apocalypse
Many professional Mayan experts have dismissed this idea saying this theory of an impending doom is not found in the classic Maya accounts. The general idea is that the said calendar ends on that day is a misinterpretation of the facts of Mayan history and culture and hence based more on popular speculation than on actual facts. Another theory that doomsday players have often used to support Mayan apocalypse is the far fetched theory of galactic alignment. One of the popular interpretations is that it will in some way create a collective gravitational result between the Sun and a super-massive blackhole present near the center of the galaxy called Sagittarius A. This is speculated to create massive disturbances on Earth. However this theory has been criticized by all scientific backgrounds which said that the Sun does not lie on the exact galactic center during any part of its journey but Sagittarius A would need to be several million times closer to Earth to even have any effect from its current distance of 30,000 light years!
We human by nature are speculative and like to dwell in facts of mysteries. Perhaps this is why we give so much attention to doomsday predictions such as the Mayan apocalypse.
